My Restoration work
I get lots of satisfaction bringing disc musical boxes back to life. When I find them they are generally suffering from years of neglect and are often musically silent. The process of restoration involves stripping down the mechanisms to address any issues and repairing or replacing where necessary. I try to retain as much originality as possible. In some cases, the lead resonators (The weights that lower the notes of the comb to produce bass notes) have corroded and need replacing. In this case, the comb is re-tuned to the original tuning scale. Once the mechanism is complete, the case is restored. Problems that occur are cracked and warped wood, missing inlay and a damaged shellac finish. The case is restored using traditional methods and a french polished finish is applied as it was originally.
Polyphon style 63 clock

A recent acquisition; a beautiful floor standing clock that plays 11" discs on the hour if desired. It is also coin operated and plays music when a penny is inserted. This will be a long and time-consuming project as the case requires replacement mouldings and a total re-finish. The musical section has seized up due to old oil and dirt and will require a complete strip down, However; the biggest task is to find and replace the clock mechanism as the one with the instrument is the wrong type. This could take a while!
